Session 10: One

Passage: John 17

Reflect:

  1.  Jesus uses the word “one” six times to refer to the unity of the Father and the Son and to the unity of the disciples. Take a minute to describe the oneness or unity the Father, Son, and Spirit must experience.

  2. Jesus prayed that we would be one in the same way that he and the Father are one (v. 21). How could he even dream that was possible? He also prayed that we all be “perfectly one” (v. 23). How? Reflect on (a) what this would look like, (b) why this seems so impossible, and (c) what it would take.

  3. Jesus uses the words “so that” a couple of times in speaking about our unity. What is at stake in us being united? What does Jesus want it to accomplish?

Do:

Take a step toward unity. If there is any kind of division you have with anyone in the church, take a step toward healing that relationship. Beyond that, think of a step you could take to increase oneness with the other believers God has put in your life. Take at least one step in that direction this week.
